If you're getting started on creating your first ever website or you've started a website design contest, it is important to identify whether the type of site you require is static or dynamic.
A static website (sometimes called brochureware) is entirely made in HTML and doesn't automatically update or change page layout or content. In contrast, dynamic sites use programming languages like PHP (hypertext preprocessor) or ASP.Net, both frameworks are server-side applications for dynamic web development or can be built on a CMS (content management system).
The acronyms are not the most important part! You need to think about the requirements of your users, your business and your team when thinking about getting a new website designed.
Here's three key factors to consider when assessing which type of website you need for your business or organisation:
1) Initial Cost / Budget
Static websites cost significantly less than dynamic websites. This is because static websites do not require a lot of time for development and have simpler structures. Dynamic sites usually involve database configuration, as well as CMS set up, which requires more time and skill.

2) Interactivity
Static sites can only offer one-way communication. If you require a lot of interaction with your user or would like to engage your user further, a dynamic site may suit you better.
Do you want to integrate social networks into your site such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, or blog platform like Worpress or Tumblr? Do you want your customers to buy products direct from the site or be able to book accommodation or an activity? If your site is a multi-way conversation or needs to manage and process transactions in real-time then a static might not suit all our requirements.
Dynamic websites don't have to be complicated, they can be simple such as a basic contact form, or even a shopping cart for your users. Think through what actions you want your users to take. If they just need to passively consume content and then leave your site, go static. If you want them to interact (share, sign up, buy, comment) you need a dynamic website.

3) Content Management and Update Frequency
Who will be updating your website and how often will it need updating? Do you have inventory that needs to be added to the website or announcements that need to be published daily or weekly?
If you're likely to be making frequent updates to your site then a dynamic site may be better suited to your needs. Most dynamic sites can be set up so you can access the back end through a user interface (usually called a CMS) and be able to update your website content without further help from your developer. Blogging platform, Wordpress, is an example of an easy to use interface for updating content. Note, DesignCrowd offers Wordpress design.
Static sites cannot be set up this way and would require a developer (or someone with coding knowledge) to insert updates into the code. Watch out as the costs can escalate if you take this approach.

Web Design projects on DesignCrowd are for uncoded designs, allowing as much flexibility as possible when building a website. This also places the emphasis/focus on creativity.
From $340, a web design contest can be launched where in 1-3 pages can be designed. Higher packages are available should you need more pages customized. Through contests, a number of different concepts from several designers are presented to choose from. After you have decided on a design, you can present it to a developer and have it coded.
