5 Alternative Logo Choices for Tokyo 2020 Olympics And Why They Work So Well

Earlier this month, it was reported the official logo for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo had been scrapped after allegations of plagiarism against designer Kenjiro Sano.

Since DesignCrowd has huge a community of talented logo designers ever at the ready, we thought we'd give the International Olympic Committee a helping hand to get back on track.

We put a shout-out to our 480,000+ designers to come up with suitable re-designs. And within just 24 hours, we had more than 200 designs to choose from, with some of our favorites showcased below,

Congratulations to our winner!

One of the most important aspects of successful logo design is to bring key elements of a client's company tradition or personality into the design to communicate a strong, appropriate message.

Our winning designer waytfung's choice to incorporate elements of the ancient Japanese "shodo" calligraphy is a fantastic way to reflect the country's unique personality, while creating a beautiful, modern logo. The abstract depiction of the Olympic flame above the "Y" in Tokyo firmly seals the deal for us.

Designer Enzzok's logo submission gives strong nods to the Japanese flag, with the iconic red dot on a white background incorporated into a design which also showcases prominent shapes often seen in traditional Japanese architecture and design.

Despite the strong references to historic design influence, the clean shapes and sans serif font let the logo look clean and modern.

We can see why designer "see why" made the choices they did (sorry, we had to...). They too use color and brush strokes to acknowledge Japanese tradition. Their choice to have "2020" read vertically makes for an interesting design, which coupled with the descriptive typeface for "Tokyo" invokes the fun and excitement the World expects from the Olympic Games.

This logo is all about boldness and subtlety. The graphic resembles a bold outline rectangle. The "T" angled to the right of the rectangle has the same stroke weight as the rectangle, making the graphic appear interesting and powerful.

The text is justified and aligned to the graphic, recreating its rectangle shape, which makes for a coherent overall look. Throughout, the choices of color for the "O's" in the text, as well as the circle shape in the rectangle graphic, create beautiful nods to the Japanese flag and Olympic logo.

This design moves away from the red, black and white color scheme of most entries, and instead chose colors inspired by Japanese cherry blossoms, which in Japanese culture stand for renewal and fleetingness, and have inspired families and friends to come together in a celebration called hanami, which can be traced back over a century.

As if the perfect color choice wasn't enough, designer ideartery also incorporated elements of traditional brushwork in this dynamic design, which reflects the Olympic motto perfectly.
