The World's Most Famous Bridges in the Wrong Places

Bridges are some of the most iconic landmarks of any city, and are a defining cultural, historical and architectural element within their surroundings.

In the 1960s, London Bridge was dismantled over the River Thames, and relocated brick-by-brick to Lake Havasu City, in Arizona. But what if some of the most famous bridges around the World today were upped and moved to a new location?

Here at DesignCrowd, we challenged some of our community of 480,000 designers to imagine these recognizable structures spanning foreign waters.

We received more than 60 designs for this contest, and here are some of the best:

San Fran Bay to Brazil

jkrebs04 replaced the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, which crosses Lake Paranoá in Brasília, Brazil, with San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

The attention to detail, which included addressing the reflections in the water and the gaps between the suspension cable, made this a clear winner.

Sydney Harbour Bridge over The Thames

Emily Williams positioned the Sydney Harbour Bridge in place of Tower Bridge, in London.

Despite the differences in design, the use of a two night time shots and good color blending ensures it does not look out of place.

Pont du Gard combined with the Stari Most

Sharky combined the setting for the Stari Most, in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the Pont du Gard from the south of France.

Describing his choice, Sharty said: "I loved the way the two looked when I placed the two next to each other. Stari Most is much more dramatic and romantic, but an aqueduct is so historically rich I thought it would be fun to combine the two."

Tower Bridge over Sydney Harbour

DLab's design places Tower Bridge across Sydney Harbour.

The seamless swap is enhanced by the careful inclusion of reflections in the water and the appearance of the sunset sky through the cables.

Some Italian flavour brought to Melbourne

Stevenphillips23 chose to replace Princes Bridge, in Melbourne, with the Ponte Vecchio, from Florence.

The bridge from 1300s doesn't look out of place in the modern surroundings due to the composition of the picture, and the brick colors mirrored in the water.

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge in an urban setting

The spectacular design of the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge has been moved from an idyllic location to the hussle of Hong Kong.

PuritaMok's entry works well in replacing Mount Taranaki in the background with a cityscape.

Out with the new

stevenphillips23 replaced the world's tallest bridge, the Millau Viaduct, in Southern France, with the classic Pont du Gard Aqueduct.

The designer said: "These two bridges are less than 200km away from each other, but I like the contrast between ancient and modern."

Bridging the gap

Here bijuak imagines what the Golden Gate Bridge might look like if it was used to span the Grand Canyon.

From Harbour to Falls

KaguDesign decided to move the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Niagara Falls, replacing the Rainbow Bridge.

The swap doesn't look too out of place, which is probably unsurprising as they were opened just nine years apart.
